BLOG TOUR - REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Moonlight and Oranges by Elise Stephens

Book Description:
A timeless tale of young romance.

Lorona Connelly is ready for a change from her carefully planned, bookish life. When sparks fly at a costume party, she embraces a chance for romance with the handsome Kestrin Feather. However, she quickly realizes that even love and destiny may not be enough to overcome the reality of an overprotective mother-in-law and Kestrin's long, tarnished history of relationships.

When Lorona's curiosity leads her to Kestrin's journal, doubt plagues them both with insecurities and threatens the relationship. Can true love overcome the odds, or was their whirlwind romance just a frivolous crush? Author Elise Stephens shares a journey of young love, fate, and wounded trust in the story of Lorona and Kestrin, a couple who must learn to overcome their fears to share a life together.

About the Author:
I was raised by a very loving family who home-schooled me through most of high school before I moved on to college and a Creative Writing degree at the University of Washington.  I started reading at age four, drawing picture story books at age six, typing stories on the computer at age ten, and I haven’t stopped since.

I love Jesus, beauty, art, and truth.  When I’m not writing, I enjoy live theater, swing dancing, eating tiramisu, singing, painting, and laughing till my stomach hurts.  I crave Dilettante’s chocolate-covered fruit medleys in case you’d like to know how to bribe me.  I live in Seattle with my husband.

My Thoughts:
Lorona Connelly is a rather shy and timid young woman. She is dragged to a Halloween party by her friend Yuki and it's there that she meets Kestrin Feather. It's no secret that Kestrin is a player and has been with many woman before. But Lorona and Kestrin are about to embark on the quickest of whirlwind romances. At first I was completely taken back by the speed of it, but then we learn of Kestrin's dreams which he has recorded in a journal. His dreams tell of the woman who he will marry and he believes that woman to be Lorona. For her part, Lorona is looking for something more from life and is enamoured with Kestrin and the fact that she is the one that he wants. Kestrin plans to show his journal to Lorona but it's when she goes behind his back and reads it without his knowledge that things begin to go awry and Kestrin is not impressed when he finds out.

Kestrin's mother is a nasty piece of work and has a rather unhealthy interest in her sons romantic life. And she will go to enormous lengths to break him and Lorona apart. I found both Kestrin and Lorona to be rather dramatic at times and found myself wishing that they would both chill for a minute and just sit and talk. But all that drama leads us to the big climactic scene which for me was the best part of the book. It was suspenseful and gripping!!

When I first started reading Moonlight and Oranges I wasn't aware that it was a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, so it was great to get that bit of background information at the end of the book.

Elise Stephens has taken a tale of Greek mythology and given it a modern day twist. Woven with her wonderful storytelling, Moonlight and Oranges was an immensely enjoyable read!!

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT & GIVEAWAY: Katie Andrews Potter

Katie Andrews Potter grew up in Carmel, Indiana and at an early age grew interested in her family history. She would (and still does) spend hours upon hours looking through old books and records searching for one more branch to her family tree. Katie has always enjoyed writing and has piles of old spiral-bound notebooks filled with stories. It was on one trip to an old cemetery in Brown County, Indiana in 2009 when the storyline for Going over Home popped in her head. What if you found your own name on a headstone? What would it be like to meet your ancestors? From that day on the story took a hold in her mind until it was fully formed.  Going over Home will be published on Amazon's Createspace this summer.

Katie lives in Carmel (for now - she and her family are rehabbing a house on the near eastside of Indianapolis) with her husband, Ben and their 3-year-old daughter Eliana. She has her degree in Elementary Education and is currently working with people with disabilities. They also have a zoo of pets - 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 6 fish.

Going Over Home

Maddox's life changed the day she read her real birthdate: May 17, 1820. Not 1990, like she’d been told all along. Sure, there had been clues: her mother's old-fashioned style, the fact that her parents refuse to talk about her grandparents, but she never could have guessed they were actually from the past. And if that wasn't enough, now she has to go back in time to live for good. She has descendants living now, and if she doesn't go back their lives will never be.

Once she figures out how to go back in time, she struggles with the impending change her life is about to take, and her relationship with shy, unassuming Henry Yancey: the man she is supposed to marry. But if the decision to go back isn't hard enough, she soon finds out there is someone who will stop at nothing to keep her from going back, and he's running out of time. Will Maddie fall for Henry, and will she be able to make it back in time before the portal closes?

REVIEW: In the Band by Jean Haus

When family problems push Riley Middleton into giving up a percussion scholarship in another state and attending college from home, her friends push her to try out for a local rock band. Of course, Riley makes the band. She rules at the drums.

Riley soon finds out rock bands have a different dynamic than marching bands, especially when each of her male band mates has a major ego and is a major player. Two of them relentlessly flirt with her. The other—a dark, sexy rock god she can’t help being attracted to— is a total jerk and pushes her to quit. She becomes determined to ignore his rudeness and his hotness. Even if she was interested in jerks, a hook up would probably get her booted out of the ego-ridden band, and playing keeps her sane. Behind the drums, the world and its troubles evaporate.

If she wants to stay in the band, Riley needs to ignore the growing sparks between her and her band enemy. But as she gets to know the man behind the stage persona, ignoring him proves to be more difficult than flowing through a time sig shift.

*New Adult/Mature YA for language and sexual situations

My Thoughts:
Note to self: When you start a book by Jean Haus, you need to be prepared for the fact that once you have started, you won't be able to put the book down until you have finished, so everything else in your life will become non existent.

Whenever I open my emails and find an email from Jean asking me to review one of her books, I have this little buzz going on for days and the urge to push it to the very top of my review list is so strong simply because I love the style in which she writes and her books are always full of amazing characters!!

Riley Middleton is such a strong, self sacrificing person. Giving up her college percussion scholarship to stay at home to be the support that her mother and sister need. She has slowly become the cook, cleaner and caregiver. But drumming runs deep within her veins!! Eventually she is convinced by her friends Marcus and Chloe to try out for the spot of drummer in the band Luminescent Juliet.

While the singer is eye candy, the guitar player is walking lust. Dark hair. Dark eyes. Muscled body in a tight, dark tank top. Everything’s dark about him except the small, silver hoops lining his ears. The girls waiting behind him practically pant.

In the band should have come with a warning... Contains one incredibly hot, inked, guitar playing rock god who you will swoon over, lust after and fall in love with!! Romeo is such a deep character and he is far from being the typical what you see is what you get rock star. I didn't think I could love him more but then he played the fiddle and had a love for Mumford & Sons, which happens to be my favourite band!! So from this point on, it's going to be pretty hard to top the perfection of Romeo in my eyes!!

But this is no love at first sight romance. Riley and Romeo can barely stand to be in the same room as each other and Romeo makes it his mission to get Riley to quit the band. But the attraction and sexual tension between the two of them is pretty hot!!

This book is not all happy romance, make out sessions, music and hot band members!! No, this book deals with some pretty tough issues. Between what Riley is dealing with on a daily basis and what Romeo has clawed his way back from... These are characters who have flaws. Characters who make mistakes and mess up. But they are characters who you will fall in love with!!!

Reading a Jean Haus book is my happy place! In The Band is another amazingly well written book!! And as with everything else of Jean's that I've read I will be reading In The Band again and again!!!

GUEST REVIEW: Vexyna's Awakening by Alphya Cing

Angered earth, provoked by the power of the Red Empress, evicts Vexyna from her home and forces her to confront the truth about her family line.

Along the way Vexyna learns of a woman who drains men of their vital essences and discovers that her own eyes have the power to...

The ancient noble houses of Antasta, pawns of the Scorpion-Dragon and Tiger-Dragon gods, continue their own manipulations.

The Red Empress marks Vexyna for death, but can even the mighty Empress survive Vexyna’s Awakening?

Review:
Vexyna is a girl who has been told since she was little that her eyes are too sensitive to the sun and that she must wear dark glasses all the time.  Her town is attacked by evil – all the buildings and walls fall and a purple fog has been put over all the people.  Vexyna goes on a journey trying to find out what happened, who caused it and how to fix things.  Along the way she meets some interesting people and creatures (such as a talking cat, a thief and a “girl” generated by a crystal).  She learns about the evil Red Empress, Din, and her role in the awful things that have happened.  She also learns the real reason she was told to wear the glasses and what really happens when she removes them.

I enjoyed this book and it was quite funny at times.  It was easy to read and a very creative story.  The ending was a real cliffhanger and leaves you wanting to read more on this story.  The only thing that was missing was a little romance- Vexyna seems to love one of the characters, Trulo, and he feels the same about her but really not much is touched on that part of the story at all.  This book is worth reading.

BLOG TOUR - REVIEW: Body and Soul (Body and Soul, #1) by Jamie Loeak

Today is our stop on the Body & Soul tour. You can find Jamie on the links listed below. And don't forget to stop by the other stops on the tour.

Kate, the daughter of a lawyer and marine biologist, has just moved to a small beach town in Florida. She’s forced to start over in the middle of the summer, but is used to it by now, since she’s moved around her entire life. When Kate meets Rico and Adriana on her second day at the beach house, everything changes. Kate is introduced to the world of Light and Darkness, and is thrown into the middle of it when a mysterious being attacks her one night. As Kate’s nights continue to get weirder, her friendship with Rico and Adriana grows stronger, and for the first time Kate has real friends. When Rico sits Kate down to tell her what is really happening to her, things start to click for Kate, and she is forced to make a decision to quit or fight for her body and soul.

Jamie Loeak is an aspiring YA author. She has written and published her first novel and continues to work toward finishing the trilogy, while new ideas for more novels pop into her ever changing mind. Jamie resides in Florida, where she is a middle school teacher. Finding time for writing is difficult within the world of lesson plans, assessments, and students; however, Jamie makes sure to make time for all of the things that she loves in life, including her students, pets, and loving boyfriend. When Jamie isn't writing or grading papers, she is forcing her sister into photoshoots or playing her guitar. Her current goal is to finish the Body and Soul Trilogy so that she can let her other ideas escape.

My Thoughts:
The nature of her parents work, her mother is a marine biologist and her father is a lawyer, means that Kate doesn't stay in one place for very long and so she has always found it difficult to make friends and maintain relationships. Not terribly happy about their latest move until one day on the beach she meets Rico and Adriana and for the first time Kate forms some real friendships. But it doesn't take long for things in Kate's world to start unravelling.

I loved the relationship that Kate had with her father. They had such a closeness and his love and concern for her was lovely to read. By the end of the book Kate and her mum seemed to be in a much better place but I would have liked a little more insight into why at times Kate felt such animosity towards her. The girlie time that Kate and Adriana had was fun, but I have to say that my favourite relationship was Rico and Kate. They definitely had the rocky moments and you sure couldn't say that things were smooth sailing!! They are both quite hot headed at times, but you have to love characters who are so passionate about their beliefs.

Jamie Loeak did a great job of building the intensity until you were at the point of sitting on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what would happen next especially once we hit this huge climactic scene where there was just so much going on!! It was so emotional and at times heartbreaking!!

So if you like your paranormal with a dose of romance and a shot of action and intrigue than you can't go wrong with Body and Soul.

About Tenaya Jayne
Hello. My name's Tenaya and I'm an addict. I mean author. When I was growing up, writing was just something I played at from time to time. I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I was one of those people who could never finish anything. When my eldest son was diagnosed with Autism, I began to write seriously. Writing became a necessity for me in the midst of my heartbreak. It was either that or take up drinking. I 'm thankful I chose writing as my escape because I discovered it truly is my thing. I want to be swept away when I read. That's what I want my books to do for you. The main goal of my writing is to entertain you. I want to help you escape everyday life for a little while. I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy sharing them with you!

I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful sons. I'm an advocate for Autism awareness, and women trapped in abusive relationships. I try to always look on the bright side and help others do so too. I've lived many places but I currently reside in Missouri. I love reading, indie and foreign films, gardening, and moody music.

Excerpt
Forest pressed her back against the cool concrete wall, wanting to remain aloof from the entity of the crowd. She chose her position in the shadows, out of the paths of the roving, multi-colored spotlights. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling of the undulating human pheromones flying around on the air. At the beginning of every shift, she allowed herself a few minutes of this alien/human experience, though she didn't fully comprehend the combination of dancing, drinking, and ear-breaking sound waves. They loved it, however, and never seemed to deviate from the recipe.
These were the people she was sworn to protect. She had developed a light affection for the human race and considered them a benign, if not slightly silly, bunch of creatures. Her religious passion for her job was rooted in hatred of that which harmed the humans, not a superhero tendency to protect the weak.
Forest opened her eyes and focused all her senses to sniff out the illegal suckers that tried to sneak through the portal. She was in the zone tonight, and not for the first time did she feel that hers was the best job in existence. It was a shame she couldn’t legally kill suckers in her native world.
Over the next two hours, Forest didn’t move from the wall. She monitored the light traffic through the portal: two shifters and one elf, each of which nodded to her respectfully as they passed. Yawn. The shifters left the club to enjoy the delights of Austin’s nightlife elsewhere.
The elf would have been breaking Regia’s law had he left the club, but he dutifully seated himself at the bar and ordered a fuzzy navel. He wore a plaid, porkpie hat, pulled down over the tops of his pointed ears. Forest didn’t know him personally, but she had seen him in here before. The bartender surveyed him with narrowed eyes as the elf nervously tugged his hat down further and ordered a few more girly cocktails.
Intent on making sure that not one sucker was able to sneak past her, Forest was blindsided by the drunk bubba who had been trying to catch her eye for the last twenty minutes. He had finally decided to stagger over to hit on her.
“Hey babe, you’re too beautiful to look so lonely. How’s ‘bout I buy you a drink?”
“How’s ‘bout I call you a cab instead?” Forest mimicked his drawl.
“Only if you share it with me, Darlin.” He leaned in closer, and Forest’s throat began to sting from the noxious fume of booze mixed with his natural musk.
“While I appreciate the offer, Jethro, It seems only right to inform you that I’m not actually attractive at all. If you leaned in a little closer, you’d see that you’ve fallen victim to the effect of beer goggles. A hag like me can’t take advantage of a stud like you.”
As he leaned in, Forest instantly enlarged her nose, pockmarked her skin, evaporated her front teeth, and added a large black mole with a long hair sprouting from it for good measure.
“You’re no hag, baby! You’re the sexiest little thing in…I…uh… ” He stumbled backward. “Good grief! Sorry, sorry…” he stammered, retreating. “I’ve gotta quit drinking,” he mumbled as he turned away.
Forest chuckled to herself once he absorbed back into the crowd. Being a shape shifter sometimes had unusual perks.

THE MESSENGER EXCERPT

One day he asked me to teach him the yoga warriors. So I did.
“Watch me,” I said and took a Warrior One pose. And yes I was fully dressed this time.
“I am watching.” He massaged Nathan the horse’s neck, shoulder and leg. “Have you seen a stronger warrior, Nathan?”
I willed myself not to blush. “Do you really want to learn this?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Then come over here and do what I’m doing.”
He did but his alignment was awful. His knees weren’t lined up, his hips were definitely off.
“No.” I tapped Samuel’s knee with my finger. “Bend your front knee so it lines up directly over your ankle,” I said. “Otherwise if you practice poor form for any length of time you will totally screw up your knee. Then you might need arthroscopic surgery or something.”
“No surgery.” He shook his head. “I heard that is torture.”
“Arthroscopic surgery’s not that bad.”
“The father of my friend got shot during a battle. The doctor performed surgery. Cut off his leg to save him,” he said.
I winced. “That’s awful. How long was he in the hospital?”
“The doctor took his leg on the battlefield. He still screams at night when he hears the sawing sounds in his head.”
I think my blood pressure plummeted and I probably turned deadly white as Samuel grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “Show me more Warriors.”
“I don’t know.” I felt a little queasy. “Maybe I should go.” Go back to the clattering of el trains, TV, movies, the Internet, my school, friends and family. Back to modern times where they did surgeries in hospitals.
He placed my hand on top of his knee. “Stay. Show me.”
I felt the muscles in his leg. He was so strong. He placed a finger under my chin and tilted it up so I looked into his eyes. He was beautiful. His cheekbones were high, his eyelashes jet black and long, his nose regal and his lips full. I was doomed.
Back at home a guy as hot as Samuel would never be interested in me. He might say, “Hey,” to me at a club if he knew I was a friend with Chaka, whose parents were music mogul gods. But he’d quickly move on and start checking out the models that were at all the events for schmoozing reasons. Then I’d never see or talk to that guy again.
Samuel put his hand on my cheek. “Where are you?” he asked.
“I was just thinking about my home,” I said.
“What about your home?”
“I really miss it. Is that crazy?” I asked.
“No. The Endicotts were good people,” he replied.
“Not the Endicotts.” I flashed to those first moments I woke up on that blood soaked ground surrounded by all the colonists who had been slaughtered. Which was also the first moment I laid eyes on Samuel as he surveyed the scene, me, and then disappeared into the woods with Tobias.
“You are not Abigail, are you?” Samuel asked.
Dang. There was no way I’d be answering his question.
“Warrior Two.” I pulled away from him. “Stretch your back leg behind you and turn your heel slightly in.”
He did.
I reached down and adjusted his heel. “Now extend this arm.” I tapped his left arm. Amazing sensations flooded my body. I felt like I’d downed a shot of honesty mixed with a chaser of courage.
It was coming through Samuel to me. Why wasn’t I meeting his magical soul back in Chicago? I was increasingly overwhelmed by desires to be with him for real. (Note to Self: Not the best idea to fall for a guy who lives 300 plus years before you were born.)
“What do you want me to do now?” he asked.
I was still holding onto his arm. Oops. My hand flew off him. “Sorry!” What did I want him to do? Be real for me, I thought. Do not vanish, don’t disappear.
“Abigail was never nice to me. She kept to herself, had secrets she did not share,” Samuel said.
I covered a cough. “Maybe she changed. I mean, I changed. Stretch your arm toward, um, the door and your other arm in the opposite direction,” I said. “Toward me.”
He did. “Do us both a favor. Tell me your real name?” He asked while he mastered a perfect Warrior Two pose. Strong, fierce, sexy. The only thing left for him to perfect the pose was—
“Right,” I said. “Turn your head and face out over your front arm.”
“Show me.” He closed his eyes and waited.
Samuel was in an almost perfect lunge. How was it possible that this mysterious guy and I could have this chemistry, this connection? Perhaps I was the only one feeling it. Maybe he was just meant to be a friend or a mentor, or worst-case scenario, temporary, like Brett.
“Breathe, Samuel.” I placed my hands on each side of his beautiful face and turned it toward me. Nathan the horse whinnied and stomped his foot. “Open your eyes. You’re new to yoga. You don’t want to fall.”
His blinked his eyes open. Our faces were inches apart. “Sometimes falling can be a good thing.”
“Oh.”
“I promise you.” He took my hands in his and put them on his chest on top of his heart. “I promise you I will tell no one. I will keep your secret. Tell me your real name and where you are from.”
A few seconds passed but they might as well have been hours as my heartbeat drummed in my ears. “My name is Madeline Blackford,” I said. “Madeline Abigail Blackford from Chicago. Illinois. Over three hundred years in the future.” I ripped my hands from his and ran out the door.
